A fitting homage to the late Sir Bobby Charlton was given on Friday night during England’s Euro 2024 qualifying match against Malta.
The Three Lions played their first match at Wembley Stadium following the devastating news of the 1966 World Cup winner’s death on October 21.
At the national stadium, there was a minute of applause prior to kickoff while spectators could see a crowd mosaic of “Sir Bobby.”
In the center circle, a wreath and a red No. 9 shirt, similar to the one Sir Bobby wore in the historic final 57 years ago, were placed, and on the large screens, a picture of the former England men’s goal record holder was shown.
The week when the icon’s burial was held at Manchester Cathedral, the official matchday program was also devoted to Charlton.
In the game, England won 2-0 over Malta to continue their winning Euro qualification campaign.
Although Harry Kane’s goal in the second half and Enrico Pepe’s own goal guaranteed Gareth Southgate’s team a spot in the tournament in Germany next summer, they still led Group C going into the game.
Harry Maguire of United played the entire ninety-minute game, but Marcus Rashford of the Reds was substituted just after the hour, following a rough-looking clash with international teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Goalie Andre Onana played 81 minutes of Cameroon’s 2026 World Cup qualifying match against Mauritius in another match on Friday.
The final phases saw Onana appear to depart the field with his country’s medical staff flanking him, but our no. 24’s team won 3-0.
In a crucial South American World Cup qualifier earlier in the day, Uruguay defeated Argentina 2-0 thanks to the play of youthful winger Facundo Pellistri.
