Sir Bobby Charlton is honored prior of England’s match against Malta at Wembley Stadium.
On Friday evening, England’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Malta featured fitting tributes to the late Sir Bobby Charlton.
The match at Wembley Stadium was the Three Lions’ first since the tragic death of the 1966 World Cup winner on October 21.
A minute of applause preceded kickoff at the national stadium, as a crowd mosaic of ‘Sir Bobby’ was visible from the stands.
A wreath and a red no.9 shirt, similar to the one worn by Sir Bobby in the successful final 57 years ago, were laid in the center circle, as an image of the former England men’s goals record holder was shown on the big screens.
In the week following Charlton’s funeral at Manchester Cathedral, the official matchday programme was also dedicated to him.
England overcame Malta 2-0 in the encounter to keep their unblemished Euro qualifying campaign going.
Gareth Southgate’s team has already qualified for next summer’s tournament in Germany, but an Enrico Pepe own goal and a second-half strike from Harry Kane meant that another three points were added to their Group C-leading total.
United’s Harry Maguire played the entire 90 minutes, although fellow Red Marcus Rashford was taken out after a hefty-looking clash with international teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Goalkeeper Andre Onana played 81 minutes of Cameroon’s 2026 World Cup qualification opener against Mauritius on Friday.
Our no.24’s country won 3-0, despite Onana appeared to depart the field in the closing minutes escorted by his country’s medical team.
Earlier in the day, Uruguay’s youthful winger Facundo Pellistri scored in a 2-0 win over Argentina in a crucial South American World Cup qualifier.
