Liverpool legend Graeme Souness believes Chelsea star Raheem Sterling is superior to Manchester City counterpart Jack Grealish. Sterling has not been called up to the England squad by manager Gareth Southgate since the 2022 FIFA World Cup, whereas Grealish has been a regular.
Sterling has been a key player for England and one of Southgate’s most trusted players over the years. However, the Chelsea attacker has fallen out of favor with Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate in the last year.
Graeme Souness, on the other hand, believes Sterling is far more dangerous than Grealish due to his directness and pace. Grealish, according to the former Liverpool midfielder, is also very predictable.
According to TBR Football, Souness wrote in his Daily Mail column:
“Would you rather play against Sterling or Jack Grealish as a full-back?” I believe that ten out of ten players would prefer to play against Grealish. Sterling poses a greater threat to him.””Defendants are afraid of speed and directness. Grealish threatens to go down the line, does a couple of stepovers, then cuts inside and almost always plays the ball square.”
Souness added that Manchester City have Jeremy Doku, who is very similar to Sterling, which is why Pep Guardiola prefers the Belgian over Grealish.
“Sterling attacks you, and as a defender, you hope you have a teammate covering you.” At Manchester City, we’re seeing less and less of Grealish and more of Jeremy Doku. Do you want to go up against Doku? No, because he resembles Sterling.”
Sterling struggled in his debut season for Chelsea after joining from Manchester City for £47.5 million last summer. He had 10 goals and four assists in 40 games across all competitions.
This season, the 28-year-old has improved, scoring five goals and providing two assists in 14 games across competitions. Grealish, on the other hand, has yet to score and has only provided two assists in 13 games this season.
