Sunday night’s 102-100 victory over the depleted Memphis Grizzlies assisted the visiting Boston Celtics in extending their winning run to six games with the contributions of Kristaps Porzingis, who recorded 26 points, eight rebounds, and six blocked shots.
At the 1:01 mark, a dunk by Porzingis broke a 100-100 deadlock. Santi Aldama missed a three-point attempt with four seconds remaining that would have given Memphis the lead. Zaire Williams retrieved the rebound, but Porzingis prevented him from making a shot on the buzzer.
Five assists, nine rebounds, and twenty points were added by Jayson Tatum for the Celtics, who have defeated the Grizzlies 15-1 in their last sixteen meetings. Sam Hauser of Boston made five of seven 3-point attempts off the bench to conclude with fifteen points.
Desmond Bane led the Grizzlies in scoring with 30 points, in addition to providing eight assists. Aldama contributed two thefts, twelve rebounds, six assists, and 28 points to her total.
Memphis’ injury report listed eight players as out with absences. Xavier Tillman Sr. (knee), Luke Kennard (knee), Derrick Rose (foot), and Marcus Smart (ankle) are among the Grizzlies players who were unable to apply the knee. Jake LaRavia, who was listed as doubtful due to an eye abrasion, also did not participate.
With 1:48 remaining, Bane made a 3-pointer for Memphis, which increased their lead to 100-98. However, Boston squared the game with 1:33 remaining on two free throws by Porzingis.
After trailing 27-26 after one quarter, the Celtics held a 56-53 advantage at halftime. In the first period, Aldama recorded 17 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. With sixteen points, six rebounds, and three blocked shots, Porzingis paced Boston.
Boston held its largest lead of the half, 50-40, after Tatum made a basket with 3:16 remaining in the half. In terms of points in the interior, the Celtics held a 30-14 advantage during the initial two quarters.
With 23 points scored by each team in the third period, the Celtics entered the fourth with a 79-76 lead.
Memphis fell to 0-6 at home with the loss.
