When questioned about the influence the forward has had in the Middle East, Gerrard, who recently relocated to Saudi Arabia to coach Al Ettifaq, was all praise for the captain of Al Nassr. Speaking glowingly of the 38-year-old, the former midfield player told the SPL: “The arrival of ‘The GOAT’ as we call him, Cristiano, him arriving in January obviously was a huge signing.

“He still had a lot of football to offer. So, from afar, for six months, I was looking in at Cristiano Ronaldo’s results, at the league, watching some games and watching some highlights.

“I think from that moment, the league around the world had become a very popular talking point for everyone. After Cristiano’s arrival, even more big-name signings, talents and skill sets were joining the league.”

Although Gerrard is right to point out that Saudi Arabia has seen a sharp increase in talent from the world’s top football leagues, the 43-year-old’s shift in perspective has caused controversy. Gerrard participated in an Overlap interview with Gary Neville, the former captain of United, a year ago.

Neville asked several questions, one of which focused on the “GOAT” controversy involving Lionel Messi and Ronaldo. With assurance, Gerrard answered: “It’s Lionel Messi for me. But I’m someone who would never have a derogatory word to say about Ronaldo, because he is phenomenal.”

After leaving Old Trafford without much fanfare in November of last year, the former United player joined the Saudi Pro League at the start of 2023.

The striker, who has 16 goals in 17 games, is currently experiencing a late comeback in the Middle East. Alongside United captain Bruno Fernandes, Ronaldo continues to be a vital member of the Portuguese national squad.
