Manchester United are keen on signing Joao Neves, but Benfica are set on not letting him go

Portuguese daily O Jogo claims that Manchester United has stepped up their scouting of Benfica sensation Joao Neves.

One of the most sought-after young midfielders in European football is the 19-year-old. Just lately, Bruno Fernandes pleaded with the Red Devils to sign him.

According to recent reports, United has “intensified their observations” of the young player, but Benfica’s reluctance to engage in negotiations may make a trade challenging to complete.

Rui Costa, the president of Benfica, is keen to cling onto the team’s most valuable asset and hopes to keep the midfield player around for the upcoming campaign.

To get rid of Neves, United will need to activate the €120 million release clause in his contract.

Manchester United may make a summer transfer for Neves

Last winter, Benfica took a similar stand about Enzo Fernandez. Until Chelsea agreed to pay a little bit more than his €120 million buy-out clause, they were hesitant to lose him.

It’s possible that United may have to negotiate the same terms for a long-term payment plan, but that is unlikely to happen in the January transfer window.

The team is currently facing a challenging Financial Fair Play scenario. The Glazers’ lack of investment is almost putting them over their expenditure cap.

After acquiring a minority investment, Sir Jim Ratcliffe is willing to contribute funds, although it is doubtful that the team will be able to afford Neves unless there are other exits.

Neves would make a fantastic addition to United. Even at the young age of 19, he has already won over two tackles and seven duels a game this season.

Manchester United identify Benfica ace Joao Neves as ideal Casemiro replacement

He might be considered as Casemiro’s replacement because the latter is beginning to wane. If everything goes their way, the club may spend a lot of money on him in the summer.

No European clothing company is investing a significant sum of money on Neves in January. Chelsea does not need to bolster their midfield; they are capable of doing so.
