Uruguay trounced Bolivia 3-0 Saturday in front of a loud Centenario Stadium crowd on the sixth day of the 2026 World Cup qualifying round.
Approximately 15 minutes into the first half, Darwin Núñez scored the opening goal for Uruguay following three perilous attempts at the Bolivian goal.
Nico de la Cruz took a corner kick in the 39th minute, which caused a commotion in the Bolivian goal and resulted in an own goal that extended the lead to 2-0.
Insatiable Darwin Nuñez scored the third goal by nodding a pass from Nicolás de la Cruz. Nuez has contributed to the national team’s eight goals.
Despite showing indications of fatigue in the second half, the light blue team maintained initiative and ball control despite the stormy evening.
Marcelo Bielsa then introduced Luis Suárez, the player with the most goals. Suárez then slammed the ball against the crossbar after receiving a standing ovation from the crowd after earning the captain’s ribbon.
Uruguay was made up of Mateas Via, Federico Valverde, José Mara Giménez, Sebastián Cáceres, and Sergio Rochet; Facundo Pellistri was made up of Darwin Nez and the young Cristian Olivera.
The scoring was completed by Luis Haqun, José Sagredo, Gabriel Villaml, Jeyson Chura, Carmelo Algaraaz, L. Justiniano, goalkeeper Guillermo Viscarra, R. Fernández, Jairo Quinteros, Luis Haqun, L. Justiniano, Ramiro Vaca, and Marcelo Moreno, their leading scorer, who played his final match with his national team tonight.
Uruguay earned 13 points out of a potential 18. The light blue squad has a chance to take the lead in round-robin World Cup qualifying for the first time. Argentina’s defeat to Brazil tonight at the Maracaná will be critical to this happening.
Regardless, Uruguay has put out a valiant effort in this World Cup qualifying season in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
The sky blue won three games in a row, including victories over Argentina, the reigning world champions, at the Bombonera in Buenos Aires.
Brazil has not lost against Uruguay in any of their previous four qualifying meetings. They had never defeated Argentina as guests. The plot has since shifted.
Bolivia arrived in this place having secured their first three points with a 2-0 win over Peru at home. Antonio Carlos Zago, a Brazilian-born coach who had recently joined the team, was making his debut.
