The two teams were “very close” to reaching an agreement that would have sent the 25-year-old on a season-long loan to Old Trafford, an informed source told Football Insider.

However, the talks and agreement broke down at the last minute, forcing Man United to focus on making a temporary move for Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon.

Cucurella has apparently fallen out of favor under new boss Mauricio Pochettino, thus Chelsea were willing to let him go.

However, after turning around his Stamford Bridge career, the full-back is now a key player in Pochettino’s plans.

His early-season efforts are seen to have turned the Argentine around, and he has since earned a significant place in Chelsea’s defense.

This season, Cucurella has made nine appearances in all competitions, covering for Ben Chilwell and Reece James, the team’s first two choices, when they are injured.

He only signed for Chelsea in the summer of 2022 after leaving Brighton for a rumored value of over £60 million, but he had a wild debut season with the London team.

In the 2022–23 season, the defender made 33 appearances while playing for the Blues, who placed 12th in the standings, under three different permanent managers.

He has a contract with Stamford Bridge that expires in June 2028, and his weekly salary is reportedly £175,000.

This season, Reguilon has made seven appearances in all competitions due to injuries sustained by Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.
