Mason Greenwood is ‘in hot water’ with Nike when the American company issues a statement

Nike has issued a statement clarifying that Mason Greenwood is not one of their sponsored athletes, following the controversial footballer’s Instagram picture featuring some of their sneakers.

The 22-year-old, who was sponsored by Nike prior to his arrest, shared a photo of himself wearing a pair of Nike Air Max 97s and another of his shoe collection, which included many pairs of high-end sneakers.

This prompted supporters to wonder if the American brand will re-sponsor the Getafe forward, who still wears their boots.

However, this is not the case, and when Nike became aware of the inquiries, they issued a statement to clarify the matter.

Mason Greenwood's Instagram activity prompts Nike to release statement

“Mason Greenwood is no longer a Nike athlete,” the American footwear company stated.

Greenwood has yet to secure a new contract with any boot supplier since his incarceration, as Nike terminated his contract. The Englishman is free to sign with another company, but it appears that no one wants to be affiliated with him because of his recent history.

The forward is also no longer a member of Manchester United, which would have been a significant draw for advertisers, and with the 22-year-old anticipated to never return to Old Trafford, a boot sponsorship with one of the big athletic brands may be difficult to come by.

It is unclear whether this will land the athlete in problems with Nike, with the American brand’s remark likely to be the last we hear of the subject.
