Wesley Fofana, a Chelsea defender, has resumed light training as he works his way back from a major knee injury.
After undergoing anterior cruciate ligament reconstructive surgery in the summer, the centre-back has been out since.
The setback was a huge blow for the Frenchman, who was injured for much of the 2022-23 season.
Fofana was limited to 22 competitive games in his first season with Chelsea following a £70 million deal from Leicester City in 2022.
There were concerns that the Frenchman’s recent ailment would keep him out for the entire 2023-24 season.
However, Fofana has given Chelsea a boost after returning to light exercise on Thursday, stepping up his rehabilitation.
Chelsea posted photos of Fofana in light training on their social media pages, with the tagline “back on the grass.”
In photographs released on Twitter and Instagram, the 22-year-old was seen greeting and interacting with Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino, as well as running.
The France international chronicled the happy development with an Instagram image with the phrase “back on track.”
While Fofana appears to be improving in his rehabilitation, it is uncertain when he will be able to resume full training.
Pochettino is also dealing with the absence of a number of other injured players, including Ben Chilwell, Trevoh Chalobah, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Marcus Bettinelli.
Levi Colwill, Malo Gusto, Romeo Lavia, and Christopher Nkunku are also questionable for Saturday’s game against Newcastle United.
The Blues, who have only lost one of their six league games, are presently tenth in the table with 16 points from 12 games.
