With manager Erik ten Hag concerned about the fitness of key players, he may find it difficult to anticipate his starting lineup for Manchester United’s match against Everton on Sunday.
Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana got hurt while playing against Mauritius and did not finish the game. He then missed the next encounter of the Indomitable Lions against Libya, returning to Old Trafford for treatment.
However, reports from multiple sources indicate that the injury is not significant and that he could play on Sunday. If not, Altay Bayindir, who has impressed for Turkey in recent international games, might get his debut.
In defense, Luke Shaw has returned to training, and while it would be unusual to throw him back into the starting lineup without a couple of games coming off the bench, when the devil drives, needs must, and we suspect Ten Hag might just go for it to try to steady a defense that has shipped three goals or more on eight occasions this season.
With Tyrell Malacia still out, Diogo Dalot and Sergio Reguilon have stepped in to fill in for Shaw. However, Dalot is currently required at right back owing to Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s hamstring injury, while Reguilon has put in some shaky performances.
We expect Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof to keep their clean sheet from the last game against Luton. Jonny Evans is almost surely out due to a hamstring injury, and Lisandro Martinez, despite attending training this week, is still many weeks away from complete recovery. Raphael Varane is looking for a chance to restore his starting berth amid whispers of discontent at the club and potentially a January move.
Moving into midfield, the injury situation is far from over. Christian Eriksen is out with a knee injury, and Casemiro is out with a hamstring strain. This leaves Scott McTominay, Mason Mount, and Sofyan Amrabat as alternatives, with Kobbie Mainoo a wild card after his strong performances for England U19s last week. Another alternative is for Bruno Fernandes to play a deeper role, with Hannibal stepping in higher up the pitch.
McTominay is the form player and will almost surely start, followed by a choice between Mount and Amrabat, two talents attempting to find their feet at United. Mount was chosen because of his enthusiasm, with Fernandes playing ahead of these two in the number 10 position.
Ten Hag believes Rasmus Hojlund has an outside chance of playing on Sunday, and we agree and think he will start. If he does not, Anthony Martial will take his place.
The most likely wing alternatives are Alejandro Garnacho (left), who did not play for Argentina this time, and Marcus Rashford (right).
Antony might be recalled but has struggled this season, Jadon Sancho is still a no-go, and Facu Pellistri hobbled off for Uruguay in the week and could be injured as well.
Amad Diallo is getting closer to being ready, but he won’t be ready in time.
With that in mind, here is our expected starting lineup for the match:
