Thiago Silva has apologised for his subpar performance in Chelsea’s loss to Newcastle.
Thiago Silva, the defender for Chelsea, has expressed regret for his careless play in the wake of the Blues’ heartbreaking 4-1 loss to Newcastle on Saturday.
Joelinton’s goal in the 61st minute was the result of a mistake by the Brazilian, but the Magpies scored three goals in the second half without answering to send Mauricio Pochettino’s team reeling.
His compatriot intercepted Silva’s careless pass, and he promptly pushed the ball past Robert Sanchez to give the home team a 3-1 advantage.
Following the match, the 39-year-old apologized profusely on social media for both his and the team’s performance at St. James’ Park.
“I’m devastated. It wasn’t a good day for us,” The centre-back said.
“I would like to apologize to everyone for the defeat, especially to my teammates who believe in me and support me every day.
‘I take full responsibility. Let’s gather strength and come back stronger.”
Alexander Isak gave Newcastle the lead in the first half, and Raheem Sterling’s free kick gave Chelsea a response.
But, Jamaal Lascelles’ header past Sanchez gave Eddie Howe’s team the lead in the second half, and Joelinton’s goal a minute later made it three.
Following two bookable offences, captain Reece James was awarded a red card, bringing the Blues down to 10 men.
He and Marc Cucurella, who received his fifth yellow card of the year after being booked for dissent, will both be absent from the home match against Brighton next week.
