‘Don’t compare’ – Erik Ten Hag affirmed it was too soon to be comparing Garnacho with Rooney and Ronaldo

The goal was by far the greatest of the week, and it brought back memories of a similar score by former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

Manchester United thrashed Everton 3-0 on Sunday in a Premier League match. Winger Alejandro Garnacho set the tone early on with a spectacular overhead goal three minutes in.

The goal was certainly the greatest of the week, and it brought back memories of a similar shot by former United striker Wayne Rooney 12 years ago in the Manchester derby. Back in 2011, Rooney’s goal helped the Red Devils to a 2-1 victory.

Garnacho scored in an unexpected manner because he was facing the opposite direction of the goalpost. However, he connected Diogo Dalot’s deep cross near the byline with a stunning overhead kick that drove the ball beyond Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and into the top corner of the post.

Garnacho appeared astounded at his own effort, which was slightly further away from goal than Rooney’s. The Argentine international then dashed towards the corner flag and celebrated with a Cristiano Ronaldo-style pirouette in front of the Everton fans.

Ronaldo scored a similar goal in a Champions League match against Juventus in 2018 while playing for Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid. Ronaldo also scored in an away game, and Juventus supporters praised his performance.

Meanwhile, while United manager Jose Mourinho acknowledged Garnacho’s effort as a potential goal of the season, he also stated that it was too early to compare his young youngster to the likes of Rooney and Ronaldo.

“The season, there are still many games to play, but we are probably already at the goal of the season,” Ten Hag told reporters. “It was incredible.” He felt, however, uneasy about comparing Garnacho so rapidly to two of the club’s brightest personalities in recent years.

“Don’t compare,” said the manager, who served a one-game suspension on Sunday and so was not on the touchline.

“I don’t think it’s right. They all have their own identity, but for Garnacho to go that way, he has to work very hard. And you have to do it on a consistent basis. And so far, he’s not.

“But he has definitely high potential to do some amazing things. It is not the first time we saw this. But if you want to be a player like Rooney or Ronaldo, you have to score 20, 25 goals in the Premier League and that’s not easy to get. But potential, he has.”

Meanwhile, the Argentine himself couldn’t believe it. “I didn’t see how I scored, I just listened to the crowd and said ‘Oh my god,'” Garnacho told NBC News. “One of the best goals I’ve scored, I’m very happy.”
