Gary Neville believes Alejandro Garnacho’s amazing acrobatic goal against Everton outperforms Wayne Rooney’s Manchester derby winner from 2011 – calling it the “best overhead kick” he’s ever seen.
Garnacho stunned Goodison Park with his effort after only three minutes in Manchester United’s 3-0 Super Sunday win over Everton, arching back to connect with Diogo Dalot’s cross and firing beyond Jordan Pickford.
Comparisons were immediately made between that goal and Rooney’s winner for Manchester United against rivals City in 2011, but Neville believes Garnacho’s performance is superior because it is “gymnastics, not football.”
“I’ve never seen an overhead kick goal as good as that.” “That was the most beautiful overhead kick I’ve ever seen,” he stated on Gary Neville’s podcast.
“Do you remember that spectacular Olivier Giroud [scorpion kick] goal that I’d never seen before?” I was there on the day Wayne Rooney scored against Manchester City, which was an incredible goal at that stage in the game.
“However, I felt it [Garnacho’s goal] was something I hadn’t seen before today.” The fact that he had to walk away immediately struck me; he comes in and out, moves his feet fast, and then throws himself in the air.
“I played professional football for a long time, and I can’t do that, not just the overhead kick, but even getting in the air to make contact with the ball – I’d think I’d break my neck!”
“Most players wouldn’t be able to do that because it’s gymnastic and acrobatic.” That’s gymnastics, not football. I’ve never seen a better overhead kick.
“People will be debating that right now and getting previous overhead kicks.” It’s an overhead kick, not a bicycle kick. You can get on your side and into that position at times. That is something we can all do. But I’ve never seen somebody get into the situation Garnacho did. Rooney’s comes close, but Garnacho’s is just superior.”
