Marcus Rashford of Manchester United dedicated his penalty goal against Everton in the Premier League on Sunday to his late cousin.
Rashford scored United’s second goal from the penalty spot in a 3-0 victory at Goodison Park. Captain Bruno Fernandes delegated penalty-taking duties to Rashford, who made no mistake in scoring the Red Devils’ second goal of the season. In a social media message, the England international has now dedicated the strike to his late relative.
Following the victory, United moved up to sixth place. Fernandes, United’s regular penalty taker, claimed after the game that he handed Rashford the opportunity to take it because he believed his teammate “needed a bit of confidence.”
“I felt Marcus needed goals,” Fernandes stated after the game. Marcus is also a great penalty taker.
“I’m 100 percent certain he can score the penalty.” It’s not about who takes it, but about scoring the penalty, which Marcus accomplished flawlessly. Obviously, strikers and wingers want to and need to score goals; it’s part of their game and it helps you.
“Marcus was unstoppable after the penalty; he could take on anyone.” I believe that sometimes you need this chance, this opportunity to regain your confidence. Marcus, on the other hand, has been fantastic for us.
“Obviously, he was incredible last season, so everyone’s expectations for this season were higher.” It’s simply a matter of getting his goals back, and everyone will continue to say he’s world-class again.”
Rashford will miss Manchester United’s next Champions League match against Galatasaray due to suspension after getting sent off against Copenhagen. As a result, the forward might make his Premier League debut against Newcastle on Saturday.
