Alan Shearer reveals ‘really sad’ watching one Chelsea player’s performance against Newcastle

Newcastle United’s 4-1 victory against Chelsea over the weekend would have delighted Alan Shearer.

On The Rest Is Football podcast, the Newcastle former did acknowledge that it was tough to watch one Chelsea player suffer.

The Chelsea team as a whole will want to forget this match, as it was perhaps their poorest of the current campaign.

The team led by Mauricio Pochettino will next play Brighton & Hove Albion at Stamford Bridge. The Argentine needs to win this match because the pressure is starting to build on him.

Sad to watch Thiago Silva struggle

Although Thiago Silva’s subpar performance on Saturday helped Newcastle, Shearer was not exactly overjoyed.

The former striker talked about the Brazilian on The Rest Is Football, saying: “When you look at Thiago Silva, who has been a great of the game, and I know we all have poor games, but I thought it was a bit sad to see because he made two huge errors. One for one goal and one where he gave away a corner in the first half.

“I know how fit he is and how he hardly ever misses a game, but it felt tough for him yesterday [Saturday]. It wasn’t good to see, as it was someone who has been so great over the years.”

Thiago Silva will recover

Silva has played this game for far too long to be defeated by a single poor performance. You would undoubtedly support his mental recovery.

It would be intriguing to watch, though, if Pochettino starts him in the match against Brighton.

This season, Axel Disasi has taken Silva’s place as the starting center back, but Benoit Badiashile is back to full fitness and participated in the loss against Newcastle.

Could Pochettino now explore a central defensive partnership between Badiashile and Disasi in the Premier League after the 39-year-old’s performance?

Since the two played side by side at AS Monaco, it wouldn’t exactly be a new one.

It would be unfair to drop Silva after just one poor performance, but at 39, Pochettino would undoubtedly want to gradually remove him from the team.

Perhaps it’s Sunday, or a little later in the year. Even though Silva hasn’t been with Chelsea for very long, he has been a fantastic servant for the team. We’ll have to wait and see.
