Jay-Z reportedly sold his controlling ownership in the D’ussé Cognac brand to Bacardi earlier this year for $750 million. As a result, it seems to reason that the rich tycoon and Beyoncé have re-invested a portion of their profits in an opulent Malibu holiday home. According to reports, the ultra-famous couple paid $200 million for a Brutalist-style house positioned high over Paradise Cove.
This incredible sale price is the most ever paid for a California mansion, surpassing the $177 million Malibu estate right next door, and the second-highest ever paid for a property in the United States. The house had previously been privately listed for $295 million. However, one could argue that the Carters received a good deal.
The property boasts 8 acres of blufftop land with unobstructed ocean and coastline views, direct access to what is arguably Malibu’s most scenic beach, and a 40,000-square-foot mansion designed by renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando, who collaborated on this mega-project with Los Angeles-based WHY Architects.
The mansion was commissioned in the late 1990s by Bill and Maria Bell — he is the son of the soap opera moguls who developed “The Young and the Restless” and “The Bold and the Beautiful” — but it took 15 years to plan and build. The massive fortress was built in 2014, at least in part, to hold the Bells’ extensive modern art collection, which includes pieces by Jeff Koons, Andy Warhol, Damien Hirst, and Marcel Duchamp.
Additional information is restricted because the property was never formally advertised for sale. Aerial views, on the other hand, display a sprawling backyard with what appears to be acres of lush lawn. There are also two massive outdoor pools, one for swimming and one for reflecting, for which Ando is famous.
The property is also renowned for its heavy use of concrete. Pacific Pervious Concrete supplied a whopping 22,500 square feet of polished pervious concrete to the estate’s driveway and motorcourts. Morley Concrete, a second contractor, delivered an extra 7,645 cubic yards of concrete for the home’s construction. The building’s interiors are entirely unknown, and we don’t even know how many beds and toilets there are, but rest assured that they are all absolutely and ruthlessly basic.
Real estate enthusiasts will recall that this is not Tadao Ando’s only residential work in Malibu; two years ago, Kanye West paid $57 million for a considerably smaller Ando-designed property near the beach.
In addition to their big new Malibu residence, Beyoncé and Jay-Z possess a penthouse in New York City and a property in the Hamptons. Their primary house, however, remains a $88 million estate in the wealthy Los Angeles neighborhood of Bel Air.
