David Beckham appears to have thrown his support behind Las Vegas’ future bid for an MLS expansion team.

San Diego was announced as the newest expansion franchise in American soccer in May and will join the league when it expands to 30 teams in 2025.

However, Sin City is gradually reestablishing itself as a sporting superpower, with the move of the Oakland Athletics baseball team earlier this month being the most recent addition to their burgeoning empire.

The city has previously received the Oakland Raiders NFL franchise, as well as the Las Vegas Golden Knights, who joined the NHL as an expansion team in 2016.

Last week, Vegas staged its first Formula One race since 1982, and the city continues to be a hub for high-profile UFC and boxing events.

So that only leaves soccer and basketball in their otherwise superb repertoire.

And soccer may arrive sooner than you think, due to Beckham’s ownership of Inter Miami, a relatively new MLS expansion franchise.

“It’s a real opportunity,” said the former England captain. “We’ve seen the hockey team come in and do incredibly well, and obviously the Raiders being here.

“In the future, who knows with MLS and if a team comes here to Vegas.”

The Manchester United icon was also asked about his opinion on the World Cup possibly coming to Las Vegas in less than three years, despite the fact that the city isn’t technically on FIFA’s list of potential host cities. 

“To be honest, I’m personally excited because the last World Cup was such a huge success,’ Beckham said.

“I’m obviously excited around World Cup year but I think it’s another moment, especially after being an owner of a MLS team. 

“The lead up to this World Cup [in America, Canada and Mexico] I think is going to be really exciting and it’s going to be showcased in the way it should be showcased. So, I’m personally excited. 

“Obviously, Las Vegas gets to host one of the games, who knows… But if it does, then I think it’s going to be spectacular.”
