Andre Onana had another bad night in the Champions League, conceding two free kicks that cost Manchester United dearly.
On Wednesday night, summer signing Andre Onana failed to carry his form from the Premier League into the Champions League.
He made a few good stops, but it was his errors that cost United the 3-3 tie, with not one, but two weak free kicks sneaking past the Cameroon international.
In the first, Onana’s poor posture led to him being caught off guard by Hakim Ziyech’s free kick. The second saw him initially save the shot before pushing it into his own net.
The £43m goalkeeper has also been chastised by Paul Scholes, who has accused him of frightening his defenders, and Manchester United have been told to find a replacement ‘ASAP’.
Former Republic of Ireland international Jonathan Walters took to X after the game to give his thoughts on the game. This decision included criticism of one player in particular, Andre Onana.
He went on to say: “If David de Gea put in that performance tonight he would be getting it from all angles.”
Before proceeding to inexplicably offer Aaron Ramsdale of Arsenal as a replacement for Onana.
“I’m sorry but Onana isn’t good enough for Man Utd and if I were them I would be getting in touch with Ramsdale’s agent asap.”
This trade would be extremely unlikely for a variety of reasons, the most important of which is that Arsenal would not be doing United any favors. The price would be raised, and Ramsdale isn’t even worth the £50 million they’re reportedly seeking.
Reason number two is that firing Onana now is absurd. He had a tough start, but he’s been rock solid in the last few Premier League games.
With the league’s joint most clean sheets, he’s showing signs of being good enough, and two – however enormous – errors alter nothing, and won’t convince Erik ten Hag to replace him.
Blaming Onana for United’s likely exit from Europe is ridiculous because the entire team is to blame. We threw away Galatasaray at home, Copenhagen on the road, and even Bayern Munich on the road, where we should have gotten something.
Having said that, Onana needs to put up a strong performance against Newcastle on Saturday to redeem himself.
