Paul Scholes believes Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is to blame for “all three goals” surrendered against Galatasaray.
Man United had an early two-goal lead in Istanbul thanks to two magnificent goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes, before the Turkish team equalized when a Hakim Ziyech free-kick surprised Onana.
After halftime, Scott McTominay restored their advantage until Onana misjudged another Ziyech free-kick, allowing Galatasaray back into the game.
Kerem Akturkoglu’s strike made it 3-3 on 71 minutes, with Scholes again blaming the Manchester United goalkeeper for the third, alleging Onana left too much space at his near post.
“Well, what can you say?” Scholes said on TNT Sports. Again, it’s a poor mistake [for the second goal]. I’m not sure what he’s trying to do; punch it away with his right hand? It’s ineffective.
“He makes people nervous, the defense nervous, the entire team nervous.” He makes simple saves appear really difficult.
“Beat at the near post [for Galatasaray’s third goal].” We’ll almost certainly have goalkeeper experts who know more about this than we do, but I don’t think he should be defeated at the near post.
“His positioning is inadequate. For me, he is responsible for all three aims. His technique appears to be clumsy.”
When questioned if Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag should accept responsibility for Onana’s signing, Scholes responded, “Managers ultimately have to take responsibility for all their signings.” It’s a shame because he’s been looking good in recent weeks, particularly in the Premier League.
“He’s looking a lot better, but he’s still making unusual saves, and the Champions League has been a real struggle for him.”
“I’m not sure why – is he too casual?” You notice him there with a sneer on his face.
“I just think he’s a little too laid back.” I don’t think his concentration is 100%, and for a goalie, concentration is everything.
“You think of the other team as well, watching the goalkeeper, and he’s nervous and all over the place, thinking, ‘We’ve just got to shoot, cross the ball in, get the ball in and around him,'” says one. He always appears to be on the verge of conceding!”
