The Boston Celtics lost Jayson Tatum for the last quarter of their 125-119 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday night when he protested a foul call with 1.1 seconds left in the third quarter.
Tatum was issued a flagrant penalty after hitting Robert Covington in the face with an elbow while going for a loose ball less than four minutes after collecting his first technical foul. As he became further enraged by the call, he picked up his second technical of the night and was expelled, much to the chagrin of fans like David Ortiz.
The game was tied 95-95 at the time of Tatum’s expulsion, and he had 21 points, seven rebounds, and four assists in 27 minutes.
Tatum got ejected for the first time this season.
Crew chief Bill Kennedy spoke with a pool reporter about the ejection, noting that Tatum would not have been dismissed if it hadn’t been his second technical foul:
QUESTION: What was the reason for Jayson Tatum’s ejection?
KENNEDY: After a loose ball foul was called on Jayson, he continued to argue and was repeatedly told to go to his bench. He continued to protest about the foul on the floor and made overt motions toward the officials, earning him a second technical foul.
QUESTION: So he was removed only for committing a second technical foul? He did not say anything that would have resulted in an ejection regardless of his technical count.
KENNEDY: You are accurate.
This was already a game without a couple of players, as the 76ers were without Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid due to sickness. Kristaps Porzingis was out for the third straight game with a calf ailment for the Celtics.
The victory was Boston’s third in a row, bringing the team’s record to 15-4 overall and 9-0 at TD Garden. They also maintain their lead in the Eastern Conference standings.
