Erik ten Hag has issued a serious warning to Andre Onana ahead of Newcastle match

The Cameroon international was to blame for all three goals his team conceded in Wednesday’s 3-3 Champions League draw with Galatasaray.

Despite another poor showing, Onana is poised to start tonight’s match against Newcastle at St James’ Park.

Ten Hag insists that he and his team have complete faith in the £50 million summer purchase from Inter, even going so far as to suggest that Onana is currently the Premier League’s second best goalkeeper.

United presently have the seasoned Tom Heaton and another summer recruit, Altay Bayindir, on the bench, and Ten Hag argues that, despite his faith in Onana, he cannot allow his form to swing so radically on a consistent basis.

“That will not happen,’ he said. “This dressing room is together. Football is a game of mistakes and everyone can make mistakes. But this team has to cover that so we will operate.

“Nobody is undroppable, that is also clear. We have a strong belief that he will help us win trophies.”

Onana is expected to be invited into Cameroon’s team for the Africa Cup of Nations in January, after settling a dispute with head coach Rigobert Song that caused him to retire from international football after last year’s World Cup.

If called up, the 27-year-old may miss four Premier League games, with some reports claiming Onana is now scared he would lose his position in the United squad during that time.

When asked if a decision had been made on his participation, Ten Hag stated, “When they call him, he has to go. But we’re talking.”

Marcus Rashford will be eligible for Manchester United’s trip to Newcastle on Saturday, having missed the midweek drama due to suspension.
