The Red Devils were hoping to avenge their European defeat against the high-flying Magpies at St James’ Park. Ten Hag also made four changes to his starting lineup, with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial coming in for Antony and Rasmus Hojlund.

Ten Hag, on the other hand, may have regretted his decision after a heated spat with the Frenchman during the first half. A video emerged of the pair locking horns and “arm waving” wildly.

The Dutchman hooked Martial in the 60th minute, and the forward failed to produce a single shot in the hour he was on the field. In three seasons, the Frenchman has yet to play a full 90-minute game for the Red Devils.

Rashford was replaced at the same time as Martial, with Ten Hag reverting to his strike partnership from Turkey. However, it was not enough, as the Red Devils were defeated 1-0 on the night.
