Erik ten Hag and Anthony Marital engaged in a physical altercation in the opening half of Manchester United’s journey to Newcastle, as the Red Devils were once again frustrated by their opponents.
At St. James’ Park, the Red Devils sought to rebound from their European setback against the high-flying Magpies. Marcus Rashford and Martial came in for Antony and Rasmus Hojlund, respectively, as Ten Hag altered his starting lineup four times.
Ten Hag may have come to regret his choice, however, when he engaged the Frenchman in a verbal altercation in the opening minutes. The duo was captured in a video footage “arm waving” and locking horns.
After being hooked by the Dutchman in the 60th minute, Martial failed to muster a single attempt during the hour he remained on the field. Three seasons have passed since the Frenchman last played an entire 90 minutes for the Red Devils.
Rashford and Martial were substituted simultaneously, and Ten Hag reverted to the strike partnership he utilized in Turkey. Despite this, the Red Devils were defeated 1-0 for the evening.
Ten Hag remarked, “27 years old and playing for your career. I’m scratching my head why his [Martial] energy levels are so low.”
