Jurgen Klopp did not want Jadon Sancho for the same reason as Philippe Coutinho

Liverpool don’t tend to spend for the sake of spending under Jurgen Klopp, as evidenced by the Reds’ refusal to pursue bids for both Jadon Sancho and Philippe Coutinho in 2020.

They’ve splashed the cash when necessary, like as when they signed Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, but for the most part, the Reds manager prefers a player he can mold into a superstar who costs less than a ready-made one. This argument led to Liverpool turning down a move for Jadon Sancho in 2020.

Sancho was by no means a superstar at the moment, but his stock was rising and his price was following suit. He was tearing up the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund, and it was evident he was destined for more than Signal Iduna Park.

As a result, his signature became associated with a lot of clubs. Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Paris Saint-Germain were all linked with a move for Sancho last summer, but nothing came of it.

Liverpool made no attempt. because Dortmund’s asking price was judged far too high by Klopp, who quickly demanded that the Reds would shift their focus elsewhere. He made the same decision not to re-sign former Liverpool hero Philippe Coutinho.

Both players were allegedly valued at £100 million, with Barcelona eager to recuperate part of the £142 million they paid Liverpool to buy Coutinho in the first place back in 2018. Klopp is said to have claimed that by overseeing Coutinho’s comeback, he would be impeding the progress of talented young players such as Harvey Elliot.

The same could not be said for Sancho, who was only 20 at the time, but he, too, would have limited the game time of young talent already at Anfield. The wide-forward eventually made the move to the Premier League, but it was to join Liverpool’s archrivals Manchester United.
