Manchester United supporters lauded Harry Maguire after the defender’s candid appraisal of Saturday night’s 1-0 loss at Newcastle.
The former Manchester United captain, 30, was one of the few visitors to leave St James’ Park with any credit as Newcastle cruised to win. Anthony Gordon scored the game’s lone goal, but Eddie Howe’s team outclassed their opponents in every way and should have won by a larger margin.
United has already lost ten games this season, and Erik ten Hag’s future remains uncertain. He didn’t hold back after the game, and neither did Maguire, who was on post-match media duties for the Red Devils.
“The boys are disappointed,” he said, according to MUTV. “I don’t think we played at our best, and it’s been a difficult week.” We don’t make excuses for three away games in six days. We didn’t perform well enough, particularly in the first half.
“We got into the game in the second half and might have gotten a point in the end.” We put a lot of pressure on them in the last 10 or 15 minutes, but it wasn’t enough, and I think they deserved it in the end.”
Maguire was destined to leave Old Trafford in the summer after falling out of favor during the 2022/23 season, and he was linked with a move to West Ham in the summer. Despite losing the club captaincy, Maguire vowed to stay and battle for his place – and it now appears that he has won over both Ten Hag and Manchester United fans.
A slew of people responded on an Instagram video of Maguire’s post-match remarks, the vast majority of which were nice. “Maguire has been massive,” one fan stated. He deserves respect. “Ready to fight for the shirt,” one user wrote, while another added, “He can hold his head high, top performance.”
Maguire, who started the season on the bench, has now started United’s past seven Premier League games, having surpassed Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof in the Old Trafford pecking order.
Ten Hag made it clear last month that Maguire was now a crucial part of his plans after praising the defender during a humiliating 4-3 Champions League defeat to FC Copenhagen.
After discussing several defensive combinations and the struggle for positions at the back, Ten Hag stated, “Harry Maguire is doing very well right now.” As I’ve always maintained about Harry, he can do the job, and he’s proving it now.”
