Liverpool returned to winning ways in the English Premier League on December 3 with a thrilling 4-3 home triumph over Fulham, while Chelsea also rebounded with a 3-2 win over Brighton & Hove Albion.
The Reds were coming off a 1-1 draw at Manchester City, while the Blues were winless in their last two games, a 4-4 draw with City and a 4-1 loss at Newcastle United.
Mohamed Salah felt he had scored his 200th goal for Liverpool as early as the ninth minute, but he was called offside.
However, it did not take long for the Reds to strike, as Trent Alexander-Arnold, who equalized versus City, curled a stunning free kick into the top right corner in the 20th minute.
The goal was eventually determined to be an own goal by Bernd Leno because the ball bounced back off the crossbar and onto the Fulham goalkeeper before crossing the line.
The visitors were unconcerned, and only four minutes later, Antonee Robinson found Harry Wilson, who beat goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher to tie the game at one.
Liverpool kept pressing and were rewarded in the 38th minute with a fantastic long-range drive by Alexis Mac Allister, who hammered the ball into the top corner from outside the box for his first goal for the club.
Fulham did not give up and equalized again in first-half stoppage time when Kenny Tete finished with a low effort inside the area, and the goal was awarded after a lengthy VAR review.
Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez wasted two excellent second-half scoring chances, and the Reds were punished in the 81st minute when Bobby De Cordova-Reid headed in from a cross to make it 3-2.
Wataru Endo, a substitute, equalized for the Reds in the 87th minute from outside the box, before Alexander-Arnold blasted another spectacular goal and the victory barely a minute later, also from range.
Chelsea gained an early lead at Stamford Bridge in the 17th minute when Benoit Badiashile found Enzo Fernandez, who showed determination to get to the ball and head into the back of the net.
Only four minutes later, Levi Colwill scored with a looping header off a Nicolas Jackson feed to make it 2-0.
Facundo Buonanotte scored with a controlled shot within the area after collecting a ball from Adam Lallana in the 43rd minute to get Brighton back into the game.
Chelsea’s problems worsened soon before halftime, when Conor Gallagher was given his marching orders for a second yellow card.
However, following a VAR assessment, Mauricio Pochettino’s team were awarded a penalty after the break, and Fernandez scored his second goal from the spot in the 62nd minute.
Brighton added a second goal in stoppage time through Joao Pedro, but Chelsea held on to take all three points.
In the FA Cup draw earlier in the day, eight-time champions Liverpool were drawn against 14-time winners Arsenal in a third-round meeting in January, while Newcastle United and Sunderland met at The Stadium of Light.
Holders Manchester City will host Huddersfield Town, while Manchester United will travel to 2013 champions Wigan Athletic.
At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea will face Preston North End.
Other all-Premier League fixtures are Tottenham Hotspur hosting Burnley, Crystal Palace hosting Everton, and Brentford hosting Wolverhampton Wanderers.
