The penalty call was reversed, though, after a VAR check revealed that Colwill had indeed been struck in the face by the ball.

The game resumed with a drop ball, much to the bewilderment of everyone involved, even the Brighton players.

The players from Brighton were contending that it should have been a corner since the ball struck Colwill before going behind.

It was eventually clarified, though, that the referee had actually made the right call in choosing to resume the game with a drop ball.

According to the existing rules, a drop ball is utilized to restart the action in the event that a reversed VAR decision needs to be made.

Journalist Ben Jacobs clarified Brighton’s injury-time penalty appeal on social media. Levi Colwill was obviously struck in the face by the ball, but Craig Pawson called a penalty.

“He was then sent to the monitor to review and rightly correct the decision. Because the call was reversed it’s a drop ball not a Brighton corner, which is the correct application of the rules.”

Blues manager Jorge Pochettino discussed the ruling, asking: “Why did they give the penalty and then check VAR [for the Colwill handball]? It is difficult to understand why. It is not to complain, to criticise. Why was the penalty of Mudryk waiting for VAR and he gave the handball? It is so weird the way we use VAR sometimes.

“But, we need to be happy after a win.”
