Anthony Martial was involved in a dispute with Man Utd teammate prior his altercation with Erik ten Hag

Anthony Martial was embroiled in a dispute with a Manchester United teammate well in advance of his altercation with Erik ten Hag.

The Manchester United manager was overheard conversing with the Frenchman from the touchline on Saturday during the club’s 1-0 loss at home to Newcastle.

As a result of Martial’s feeble attempt to monitor Fabian Schar’s run from deep, his manager was indignant.

Ten Hag discussed the incident involving the 27-year-old following the final whistle, revealing that his touchline theatrics were aimed at the entire team and not Martial.

“It’s not about Anthony Martial, it’s about the team,” he said via the Manchester Evening News. “I try to energise the team and try to get a reaction from the team in this moment.

“As you see, we had a tough period and when you’re coaching you are a little more aggressive, so that’s normal.”

However, this is not Martial’s involvement in a contentious dispute.

The forward was reportedly involved in an altercation on the training field with academy product Dan Gore last season.

During training for the Qatar World Cup, several academy junior players, including 18-year-old Gore, were drafted in to make up the numbers.

To prevent unwarranted injuries, every participant was explicitly warned against challenging first-team members.

The Mirror reports that Gore disregarded his manager’s advice and clattered into Martial, inciting a furious altercation between the two players.

It is reported that Martial retaliated angrily, but the adolescent maintained his composure; the two had to be separated prior to the suspension of training.

As new acquisition Rasmus Hojlund continues to await his first Premier League goal, it is uncertain whether Martial will be given another start when United travels to Chelsea in the upcoming Premier League match.
