After scoring 52 goals in a treble-winning season, Erling Haaland has been nominated for the BBC World Sport Star of the Year award

Erling Haaland has been named one of six candidates for BBC World Sport Star of the Year.

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero will face fellow player Aitana Bonmati, who won the Women’s World Cup with Spain and the Champions League with Barcelona.

Max Verstappen, three-time Formula One world champion, and Siya Kolisi, South Africa’s Rugby World Cup-winning captain, have also been nominated.

The rest of the six-person shortlist includes tennis player Novak Djokovic, who won three of the four majors this year, and gymnast Simone Biles, who won four gold medals at the World Championships.

The winner will be determined by a public vote on the BBC Sport website and announced on December 19 during the BBC Sports Personality of the Year broadcast.

Erling Haaland has been announced as one of six contenders for the BBC World Sport Star of the Year award after a stellar debut season with Manchester City

After a spectacular debut season at Manchester City, Erling Haaland has been named one of six candidates for the BBC World Sport Star of the Year award.

If Haaland wins the trophy, he will follow in the footsteps of Lionel Messi, who won it last year after leading Argentina to World Cup triumph.

Only Eusebio (1966), Pele (1970), Ronaldo (2002), and Cristiano Ronaldo (2014) have been named BBC World Sport Star of the Year (previously BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year).

Haaland, who scored 52 goals in all competitions last season, will be unable to attend the Salford concert since City are competing in the Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia that night.

The primary BBC Sports Personality of the Year shortlist has yet to be released.

However, England and Manchester United goalkeeper Mary Earps is the current betting favourite to win the same award as her international teammate Beth Mead did last year.

Stuart Broad of England is the second favorite, ahead of world heptathlon champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson.

Snowboarder Mia Brookes, archery’s Penny Healey, and wheelchair basketball player Charlie McIntyre are competing for the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award.
