After playing his final game for Brazilian club Gremio on Sunday evening, former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez hinted that he may be nearing retirement. The Urugayuan international, 36, confirmed his resignation from the club last week and is now available for hire. Suarez went out in style, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Vasco do Gama.

He has been linked with a move to Major League Soccer club Inter Miami, where he would be reunited with former Barcelona teammate and close friend Lionel Messi, but comments from Suarez himself imply that he may be at the end of his career.

“I can feel pain, my body is speaking for me,” Suarez added. After a long profession, I want to enjoy myself and then make my own decisions. I need to rest and enjoy my family, and then fate will decide where I’ll be in the future.”

On Sunday, Suarez got a heartfelt farewell from both his teammates and supporters in a sold-out stadium. The forward was joined on the field by his children, sons Benjamin and Lauti, and daughter Delfina, for a hero’s farewell.

The veteran produced 27 goals in 52 appearances for Gremio, prompting manager Renato Gaucho to confess that replacing the Urugyuan would be impossible.

Suarez’s career has been marked by success and an astounding goal total. After arriving in Europe for the first time in 2007, he scored 111 goals in 159 games for Ajax, winning the Dutch league once before joining Liverpool in 2010.

His profile skyrocketed during his tenure at Anfield, and he established himself as one of the most feared strikers in European sport.

Suarez scored 82 goals in 132 appearances and led Liverpool to their first league title in 24 years in 2014, falling just short at the final hurdle, but this did not prevent him from winning both the PFA Players’ Player of the Year and the Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year awards.
