Chelsea have had a mixed season under Mauricio Pochettino, and Todd Boehly’s massive investment has yet to bear fruit.
The Blues have decided to pursue a long-term project that will secure future success, but after a rocky start to the 2023-24 season, Chelsea’s dreams of qualifying for the Champions League next season have been dashed.
As a result, more fresh additions are expected during the January transfer window.
Chelsea are set to lose Ian Maatsen and Trevoh Chalobah in January, and their search for a striker may force them to enter the market. But who are the five players who could go to Stamford Bridge during the winter transfer window?
Victor Osimhen (Napoli)
This one is clearly out of the realm of possibility, but crazier things have happened in football. Chelsea appear to be eager for a world-class number nine, and Victor Osimhen appears to be the best available alternative.
Napoli have no intention of moving the Nigeria international in the middle of the season, but given Boehly’s penchant for spending large sums of money, it would be naive to rule out a January transfer for Osimhen.
Leny Yoro (Lille)
Lille, like Napoli, will try to keep their greatest assets in January, although Leny Yoro is being pursued by a number of elite European clubs, including Chelsea.
At only 18 years old, he is a regular at Lille, and given Chelsea’s recent use of the French market (six French players have joined the club since 2022), adding Yoro makes sense.
Chalobah is on his way out, and considering Thiago Silva’s age, bringing in another center-back makes perfect sense, even if Axel Disasi was only brought in this summer.
Gabriel Moscardo (Corinthians)
Gabriel Moscardo is regarded as one of South America’s most promising midfielders, which is why both PSG and Chelsea are vying for his signature.
Both Liverpool and Barcelona have previously indicated interest in the Brazilian, but it appears that it is now a direct battle between PSG and Chelsea.
The Parisians appear to be leading the race at the moment, but Pochettino’s side has persuaded several young Brazilian talents to go to west London in recent months, and Moscardo might be the next.
Roony Bardghji (Copenhagen)
Chelsea is also keeping an eye on Rooney Bardghji, and Fabrizio Romano has stated that major European clubs are sniffing around ahead of the January transfer window.
Chelsea were exploring a move for the Copenhagen starlet before he scored a stunning goal against Manchester United in the Champions League, which might prove significant as they attempt to close a deal against opposition from the likes of Juventus.
Santiago Gimenez (Feyenoord)
Although the aforementioned Osimhen is Chelsea’s preferred replacement, Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez is an option.
FootballTransfers understands that Chelsea are interested in signing the Mexican ahead of the January transfer window, and a deal might take place if the Blues are unwilling to wait until next summer for Osimhen.
Gimenez’s play this season has piqued the curiosity of Chelsea scouts, and a deal might be struck if a reasonable offer is made.
