Manchester United players were fed up and “angry” with Jadon Sancho because of his habit of being late, according to Nemanja Matic.
Sancho, 23, joined United from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2021 in a £73 million move but has struggled to repeat his scintillating Bundesliga form in the Premier League. The former Manchester City youth product has only scored 12 goals in 82 appearances for the Red Devils and is currently out of favour.
After a public spat with Sancho in September, United boss Erik ten Hag took dramatic action. The Dutchman has even isolated the winger in recent weeks, but his terrible timekeeping was making a stir long before Ten Hag arrived.
Matic, who joined Manchester United after leaving Chelsea, stated that he disciplined players like Sancho and Paul Pogba for being late.
“At Chelsea, players acted professionally,” Matic told Austrian outlet YuPlanet. They were always on time and never late for training. But it happened virtually every day at United.
“Among the players who were always late were Paul Pogba and Jadon Sancho, as well as a couple of others.” The rest of us who were always on time were enraged, so we decided to organize a sort of internal disciplinary committee, with myself as president.
Erik ten Hag has removed Jadon Sancho from the Manchester United first team.
“I hung a sheet of paper on the wall and wrote down the names of people who were late.” We collected roughly £75,000 in fines over one season. We had intended to utilize the money to hold a party in London, but we were unable to do so because to the Covid epidemic.”
Sancho’s stock has plummeted since Matic left United last summer. He is still unavailable for selection after denying Ten Hag’s assertions on his social media account in September.
The attacker has also failed to apologize to his manager, who has since barred Sancho from all first-team portions of the club’s training complex. He is still training alone ahead of the January transfer deadline.
It remains to be known whether Sancho will depart United in the New Year, but Ten Hag is unlikely to try to reintegrate him anytime soon. Numerous clubs, including Dortmund and Saudi Pro League teams, have expressed interest in Sancho’s services.
