Jürgen Klopp wants Liverpool to concentrate exclusively on themselves ahead of Wednesday night’s Premier League visit to Sheffield United.
The Reds go to Bramall Lane for a 7.30pm GMT kick-off, hoping to build on last weekend’s thrilling 4-3 win against Fulham at Anfield.
Liverpool will face a Blades team led by new manager Chris Wilder, who was re-appointed in the run-up to the game.
On Tuesday, Klopp held a news conference at the AXA Training Centre to preview the game; read on for a synopsis of what he said…
On Wilder’s return and Sheffield United’s game plan…
How do I know this? I clearly recall how Sheffield United performed under Chris Wilder. Overlapping wing-backs or underlapping wing-backs, for example. That is one aspect of it. He probably has a press conference today, I’m not sure, and then training, possibly another session tomorrow morning. First and foremost, we may probably discard our analysis! I was sitting in the workplace yesterday when someone informed me it might happen… yet I still watched it. We’ll see. We must concentrate on ourselves. I don’t think he’ll change much now. What can he alter in such a short time?
We don’t have to worry about it too much. We should basically simply get ready for a football game. To be honest, we play teams with five defenders, 5-3-2 and 5-4-1, fairly frequently. We must ensure that they have a proper job to worry about. I understand it’s always like this – a new manager arrives, and we become confused; we shouldn’t. Actually, we can play in a variety of ways, and as much as I am delighted for Chris that he is back at work at his club, if he thinks about us, he must think, ‘Oh my God, they come from everywhere.’ That’s basically it, although the game will be played tomorrow, not today during the press conference.
On whether it’s too soon to call Fulham’s victory’significant’…
By the way, we’re two points behind Arsenal. What exactly is it? Is it decided? Yes, our late winner was crucial for everything, absolutely everything. That is correct. It has nothing to do with a championship season, but if you can accomplish that every week, you’re very much guaranteed to win the league; we simply didn’t do it yet. We had a few chances to do so, but we blew them. Yeah, there are a lot of things you can take from the game and what we have to take into tomorrow and the spirit and stuff like that.
OK, the first half was pretty terrific [against Fulham], and the second half was really good after we were 3-2 down. These were the two amazing moments, and everything in between could have been greater. It has been a long time. I’m not even thinking about where we might wind up. [It is] what I previously stated. We have to stay where we are until April. If we are still there, we can discuss whatever is possible right now, but I have no idea where we will be in April. [It’s] the most difficult era of football; we already played without a few guys in the [Fulham] game, but now we’ve lost Joel [Matip], which is extremely difficult. What is coming up now is quite difficult. There’s nothing to ponder about [and] plan for the following game. There’s no way. So we concentrate on Sheffield United, go for it, play our best game, and keep going.
On the importance of having a deep bench that can make an impact…
We begin with three strikers and one on the bench. I wouldn’t say that’s the world’s strongest bench, but the person who can come on is really talented – that’s true. Endo was the same, but we had other players; Curtis was out, sure, there are still some opportunities in the midfield, and [the] last line was comfy until last Sunday. That is all correct. A solid squad is required for success. There is no doubt that you require it – that is evident, and it is no longer necessary to consider what you have available.
I [see] who we have available, and then we go and attempt to use them all and figure out who and when because tomorrow night, Saturday 12.30pm, and Thursday; OK, that’s a bit of a longer break, but then we go again till the New Year. It’s just difficult. But you need a good bench to be successful, and the players from the bench were very, very effective all season. That speaks volumes about the caliber of the players.
On the goals scored against Fulham by the front three attackers…
Some of the goals were scored by the front three. I’m very convinced Dom was fouled for Trent’s free kick. Yes, we won the ball back, Macca won the ball back, and we shot from there for the second goal. And the third goal is crucial because it was a chip from Ibou, then a Darwin header to Mo, and Mo, with the chance to score his 200th goal, retains the ball and passes it back to Wataru, who fires, so that’s a huge contribution from the two strikers. The other goal comes from Cody shooting, which is stopped, Darwin crossing the ball, Kostas header, and Trent. That is how football works.
I can see that we probably tried to shoot from 40 yards until we realized that was too far. That is typical. We had some truly fantastic goals in that game. Yes, it’s a lovely thing to have because it’s a fantastic thing to have – superb set-pieces are what we’ll need, followed by scoring from distance and scoring in the six-yard box. All of these goals have to come from somewhere, or we won’t be unpredictable, or we’ll be too predictable, which is critical. The time we’re discussing has a lot of games, but all of the teams have a lot of games, so it’s about who gets the most out of it. Nothing in the world says we can’t be that right now; we just have to do it.
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s changing role and the possibility of becoming a full-time midfielder…
It’s just about us, and what we have. Is Joey present? Is Conor present? Is one of them required to play left-back if both are present? Because Kosti is unable to participate in all games. Then you must wait and see. Trent can play midfield, as we’ve always known. Trent, on the other hand, can play the character we’ve given him extremely effectively, so that’s how it is. We’ll see. If you want to be good, he needs to be influential in all areas because it only makes us better. If he plays well, like he clearly did in the previous game, that’s pretty much it.
We place him where we believe is best for him. And then people tell him that he needs to play there, that he has to play there. He rose to prominence as one of Liverpool FC’s most successful right-backs in recent memory. He made his Premier League debut as a right-back. He can absolutely play more inside. As I already stated, he will play where it is beneficial for us. And I’m not being stubborn; I don’t want to play him in midfield or anywhere else. But I’m not a part of the [external] debate; you can talk about it all you want, but it won’t change anything. We still need to make decisions about what’s best for the team – and Trent sees it the same way. He is eager to play. And, in my opinion, he must be influential, and we must ensure that we assist him in his stance. That’s all.
On whether Sheffield United would be more dangerous than previously thought because to their desperate need for points…
Of sure, that is the case. They would have said the same thing last week, because it was matchday [14]. Yes, it’s the same. That is something I am aware of. There will be a lot of enthusiasm now, with Chris Wilder in the dugout and I’m sure a tremendous reception for him, and all of that. But, in the end, we have to play a football game. Will the atmosphere be fantastic? Yes, as long as we allow it.
The only way to quiet down an atmosphere is to play your own football; otherwise, you play [and it’s] coming from everywhere. So we’ll have to play a really excellent game, but that’s understandable. Imagine if we didn’t have to play well to beat Sheffield United – it’s not conceivable in the Premier League. I am confident that they will go all out for it. And I’m confident that we will as well. That’s the only thing I can really affect; the rest will have to wait. However, the better we play, the more difficult it will be for Sheffield, and that is the task we must complete.
On Mohamed Salah’s place among the top players he has mentored…
Right on top. That is 100% correct. I’m not sure I’ll ever coach another player with his numbers. It’s just the way things are. His entire evolution as a guy, from the initial conversations we had to the conversations we have now, is fantastic and incredibly outstanding – and as a player as well. A truly remarkable player and an all-time great. There is no doubt about that. To be honest, I was fortunate to have a few terrific ones, but he is right up there, and the numbers are exceptional.
