We dug into the underlying statistics from the 2023-24 season to identify each Premier League club’s most wasteful player this season.
This statistic is calculated using each Premier League player’s xG during the season. We can see who has underperformed their shooting metrics the most this season by subtracting the amount of goals a player has scored from their xG.
It may come as no surprise that Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford has been the Premier League’s most wasteful player this season.
Last season, the 26-year-old was at his prolific best, but he hasn’t been as fortunate in front of goal this time. Rashford has outperformed his xG by 2.7 goals, the greatest of any United player and any player in the league.
our season, Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson and Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus have both been guilty of squandering some guilt-edge chances, and they both rank high on our list.
One commentator, Alan Shearer, believes Jesus needs to improve his final product, saying on Match of the Day: “He’s not a goalscorer, he never has been.”
“Looking at his numbers, he brings more to Arsenal’s game than goals; he has one in nine this season.” That is something that will and must improve.”
Darwin Nunez is undeniably one of the league’s best players to watch, but he isn’t always dependable in front of goal. He has underperformed his xG by 1.8 goals in his first 14 games.
The majority of the players on the list are forwards, although there are a few significant exceptions. Until now, Fabian Schar has been Newcastle’s most wasteful player, and Anel Ahmedhodzic has been guilty of wasting chances for Sheffield United.
