Paul Scholes names Man United’s best player against Chelsea

Following Manchester United’s victory over Chelsea, Paul Scholes lauded Alejandro Garnacho, calling him “the best player on the pitch” on the night.

Scott McTominay scored twice as United defeated Mauricio Pochettino’s side 2-1 in what has been a difficult week for the club and manager Erik ten Hag.

The Argentina international has been the club’s shining light in recent weeks, hitting a spectacular bicycle kick against Everton before scoring again against Galatasaray last week.

After a disappointing weekend loss to Newcastle United, ten Hag made changes in attack, dropping Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial to the bench and bringing in Antony and Rasmus Hojlund.

Garnacho remained in the starting lineup, tormenting Chelsea down the left wing on Wednesday evening.

While McTominay was voted man of the match after scoring his fifth and sixth goals of the season, Scholes thought the teenage winger deserved the accolade more after ‘moving up another level’ against Chelsea.

‘Garnacho was amazing,’ Scholes said to Premier League Productions. ‘I thought he was the best player on the field.

‘I know Scott scored two goals and was named player of the match, but I felt Garnacho was outstanding tonight, and he went up another level.’

United has faced rumors of dissatisfaction at the club, but they have picked up a highly valuable win ahead of a run of games that might define their season.

They visit in-form Bournemouth on Saturday before facing Bayern Munich in their final Champions League group encounter on Wednesday. A week later, on Sunday, United travels to Liverpool.

After resuming his winning ways, ten Hag praised his fans for sticking with him.

‘I’ve become accustomed to it. Each and every time. Even at terrible times, the fans and the crowd are on our side, he continued.

‘They are our supporters, and we must please them. We must give everything we have as a team because that is what they may expect from us. So we must work together and give our best effort.’
