Following a depressing and drab defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park, the Red Devils came out battling, and had McTominay been more clinical, the 26-year-old could have scored a hat-trick for United against a mediocre Chelsea team.

Erik ten Hag’s team put up a strong effort from all 11 players on the field, and the outcome will undoubtedly boost morale.

McTominay, speaking to Amazon Prime after the game, singled out three United players he thought were world-class on a great night for the Red Devils.

When asked about his goal-scoring heroics, which brought him to six for the season in all competitions, the midfielder singled out three guys in particular.

“I am delighted to score two goals but I have to give credit to all the boys,” the Scottish midfielder began. “Antony, (Harry) Maguire, Bruno (Fernandes), I can give you a list of players who were absolutely world-class tonight.”

United showed up

Things were looking gloomy for the Red Devils after their humiliating defeat to Newcastle United, but a tenacious and gritty win over Chelsea has relieved the Dutchman’s burden.

After the defeat to the Geordies, Bruno Fernandes in particular delivered a captain’s performance for the Red Devils.

If there was any doubt about the players’ devotion to Ten Hag, it would have vanished after the Red Devils’ effort against Mauricio Pochettino’s team.

The Red Devils will face the daunting possibility of Bayern Munich, Liverpool, and Aston Villa, who have just surpassed Manchester City with a 1-0 win over Pep Guardiola’s team.
