Jurgen Klopp called Amazon Prime Video host Marcus Buckland “ignorant” after he joked about Liverpool’s next game being at midday on Saturday.
Klopp’s team defeated bottom club Sheffield United 2-0 at Bramall Lane, thanks to goals from Virgil van Dijk and Dominik Szoboszlai.
They play Crystal Palace in less than 72 hours for a 12.30pm (local time) kick-off, which is one of the German’s pet peeves when his team has played on the previous Wednesday night.
Buckland quipped after the game that the Palace game was being played at Klopp’s “favorite kick-off time,” but the Liverpool manager was not amused.
“That’s really brave to make a joke about that,” Klopp interjected.
“We go home; I’m not sure what time we get home; we’ll arrive, maybe 1am-2am tonight, and then play again.” We have two sessions scheduled.
“It’s fine to rest, and then we’ll go again.” Crystal Palace also play tonight, so everything is great.
“I understand you don’t understand it as well as I do, and you work in football, so why should I explain it again?” You’re an idiot if you make a comedy out of it.”
When Buckland stated that he did not intend to be disrespectful, Klopp responded, “You were already.”
“All good, you can say what you want, I cannot say what I want because that would be really different.”
The victory at Bramall Lane, their eighth unbeaten game, reduced the margin to leaders Arsenal to just two points, while Manchester City lost at Aston Villa.
City is four points behind, but Klopp believes writing off Pep Guardiola’s club would be “the biggest joke in football history.”
“If someone writes City off that would be the biggest joke in the history of football, that makes no sense,” he went on to say.
“Arsenal is fighting, and the next game begins at 0-0.” I have no idea where it (the title) will wind up.
“With all the games coming up, it’s going to be extremely difficult and intense.” Please contact me again in April.”
Klopp also stated that defender Joel Matip has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament, which he suffered in Sunday’s win over Fulham.
“It’s an ACL, ruptured, so that’s what I unfortunately expected from, that’s what it looked like,” he explained. It’s unfortunate, but that’s all there is to it.”
Liverpool’s triumph shattered Chris Wilder’s Bramall Lane homecoming in his first match back following Paul Heckingbottom’s dismissal on Tuesday.
Wilder, who led the club from League One to ninth place in the Premier League in his first term, was fired in March 2021 and takes over a team that appears to be on a fast road down to the Championship.
The 56-year-old was greeted as a hero before the game began.
“It will stay with me forever that, I thank everyone from the bottom of my heart,” he went on to say.
“It’s been a long time coming. Some supporters may have believed my return was a mistake, but I need to gain their faith back.
“I really appreciate what Prince Abdullah did a couple of days ago when he said I was the best man for the job.” I believe I am the best candidate for the job, but I must go out and show it. I still believe I have a lot of life left in me.
“I enjoyed watching Sheffield United play tonight.” They gave me an incredible welcome.”
