Diop struggles as Sporting KC ends LA Galaxy’s winning streak

On Saturday night at the StubHub Center, it was a tale of two halves. Due to errors by goalie Clement Diop in the first half, Sporting Kansas City upset the LA Galaxy. With the help of Dave Romney and José Villarreal, the Galaxy made a late comeback. The game finished 1-2 because they were unable to win. After eight games (all competitions), the LA Galaxy’s winning streak comes to an end.

Diop Struggles As LA Galaxy Unbeaten Streak Ends Against Sporting KC

The guests began with the usual lineup. The lineup for manager Peter Vermse’s squad was 4-3-3. Ike Opara and Matt Besler were at center back, with Tim Melia in goal. The midfield was led by Roger Espinoza and Benny Feilhaber. Gerso Fernandez was to Dom Dwyer’s right at the top of the list.

Following a trip away from home on Wednesday, Galaxy Head Coach Curt Onalfo began a few different players. Towards goal was Clement Diop. Dave Romney and Jelle Van Damme shared the Captain’s Armband at center back.

Sporting got the game going well, attacking in rapid bursts. Early on, Dwyer and Gerso were highly involved. But the Galaxy had the first decent opportunity to score. Alessandrini pulled the ball down in the area in the fourteenth minute with a nice touch, but he was unable to make strong contact on the effort. Melia saved the day with ease.

Kansas City would persevere and reap the benefits. Gerso passed the ball to Espinoza in the middle of the field in the twenty-third minute. Before any defender could put any pressure on him, Espinoza took a shot at goal. Although Diop was in a good position, he mispunched it out, causing it to bounce into the net’s back.

Diop’s difficulties persisted. With a fantastic bicycle kick in the 35th minute, Ike Opara doubled the lead. A hopeful ball was fired into the box by Matt Besler. The cross ended up in No Man’s Land because no defender attempted to block Opara from reaching the ball and Diop was unable to punch it out. Opara went up to close out the play.

Later in the game, the Galaxy experienced some anxiety, but the half ended 0-2.

The second half is more energetic for Los Angeles. Better setup work was done, and Alessandrini did a good job setting himself and his teammates up for opportunities. The majority of the shots were aimed directly toward Melia, posing no threat to the goalie.

Up until the 77th minute, the Galaxy assault labored, and the action slowed down. After winning a corner, Jose Villarreal fired a risky cross into the box. Before Dave Romney got a head on it and it bounced on the goal line, it took a few deflections. The officiating crew debated the play before it was whistled down. Ultimately, they decided that the ball had over the line, bringing the Galaxy back into the game with a 1-2 lead.

In an attempt to salvage a tie, the Galaxy threw numbers forward, but were unsuccessful. During stoppage time, Gerso’s counterattack hit the post, putting Sporting very close to winning the match. The score was 1-2 at the end of the game.

The Galaxy dug themselves a hole at home once more, and Diop was the main cause of the defensive problems. When healthy, Brian Rowe is unquestionably a better choice. They’ll have to deal with a lot of injuries and bad home form for the time being.

Kansas City has won their last four Major League Soccer matches. They triumphed handsomely on the road, and their defense played a strong late game role, bending but not breaking.
