Liverpool have made a strong start to the Premier League season, with Jurgen Klopp’s side currently second in the table, just two points behind leaders Arsenal.
It is a promising return to form following a disastrous season in which Liverpool finished outside the top four for the first time in seven years.
However, with Liverpool suffering critical player injuries throughout the season and once again finding themselves in a title chase, Klopp may be looking to reinforce his team in the January transfer window.
FootballTransfers examines five players who could be making their way to Anfield next month.
Jeremie Frimpong
Liverpool has been buoyed by Trent Alexander-Arnold’s performances this season, but Klopp only has Joe Gomez as a senior backup to the right-back position, and choosing for some depth could be advantageous in the long run.
The Reds have long admired Jeremie Frimpong, who is thought to have a €40 million release clause in his contract with Bayer Leverkusen, making him an appealing target.
Frimpong has 22 goals in the Bundesliga since the start of last season, and the 22-year-old would be an ideal replacement for Alexander-Arnold as an attack-minded wing defender who can also play in midfield.
Goncalo Inacio
After learning that Joel Matip will miss the rest of the season with a cruciate ligament injury, Klopp’s January transfer plans may have been modified in the last week.
It has left Liverpool short-handed at center-back and may hasten plans to sign a long-term replacement for Matip, with the club putting a defender high on their priority list for next summer.
A number of players have been scouted, but Sporting’s Goncalo Inacio remains a Liverpool favorite due to his skills as a left-sided centre-back with an appealing release clause of €60 million, making a deal relatively simple if it was affordable.
Khepheren Thuram
While summer arrivals Alexis MacAllister and Wataru Endo have proven beneficial, Klopp’s team still lacks that additional touch of talent in the number six slot.
Liverpool’s interest in Fluminense midfielder Andre is understood to have waned, while Nice’s Khephren Thuram is still thought to be admired.
The Frenchman was targeted by Liverpool during the summer, but his €50 million price tag was deemed exorbitant. However, with his contract set to expire in 2025, Nice may explore a bargain move while Thuram’s worth remains high.
Donyell Malen
Although it may be a lower priority than the defensive side of the pitch for Liverpool, injuries to players such as Harvey Elliott and Diogo Jota have left the club on a knife-edge if more strikers are ruled out.
There may also be one eye on a potential successor for Mohamed Salah if the Egyptian is chased by Saudi clubs again in 2024, implying that a wide player may be preferred over a striker.
Donyell Malen is another player who Liverpool has been monitoring for some time. The 24-year-old has scored four times this season, and Dortmund are thought to be willing to sell him for approximately €30 million, making his transfer an intriguing option for the Reds.
Archie Gray
While the focus will surely be to secure depth for the rest of the season, Liverpool will always evaluate good possibilities for kids if they present themselves.
Archie Gray, a Leeds wonderkid, has been a breakout sensation in the Championship this season, starting 16 times in midfield as well as at right-back in the mold of former Liverpool hero James Milner.
The 17-year-old may be expensive, but he has demonstrated his ability to produce under pressure and could deliver key minutes right away, securing Liverpool one of the best young players in the country.
