Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni discussed leaving the position last month, but he has now provided an update following the Copa America draw.
In reaction to claims that he was unhappy with the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner following his recent performances in Brazil, Argentina manager Jorge Sampaoli has stated that he has discussed Lionel Messi’s future with him. According to The Athletic, Messi’s actions may have influenced the manager’s comments in his post-game news conference, and Scaloni and his coaching staff were “agitated” that Messi had not called them.
Scaloni stated ahead of the Copa America 2024 group stage draw [via @AlbicelesteTalk on X]: “I am here because I am still the coach, but I am still considering my decision.” I stated after the Brazil game that it is a time to reflect, and I am still in that state. I’m thinking carefully about how everything is going and whether or not to restart. The players are performing admirably, and they require a coach with the same degree of ambition and enthusiasm.
“My relationship with President Tapia has always been flawless.” It is entirely up to me and the coaching staff; we must consider what is best for the National Team. I spoke with Messi after the Brazil game; he is the captain, and we get along well. I also had a pleasant conversation with Tapia.”
Scaloni took over at Argentina after Jorge Sampaoli was fired following their World Cup Round of 16 defeat. Following the Albiceleste’s third-place result in the 2019 Copa America, he was named full-time coach.
The Argentine will undoubtedly be the team’s head coach at next year’s Copa America in the United States. His destiny after that point is uncertain.
