‘I’m playing the best basketball of my life’, says Jaylen Brown after signing with Boston Celtics

Jaylen Brown believes he has entered his peak after earning a historic contract extension with the Boston Celtics during the offseason.

Brown told The Athletic’s Jay King that he’s “playing the best basketball of my life” right now on both sides of the court.

Brown inked a five-year, $303.7 million agreement with the Celtics in June, much to everyone’s surprise. The contract was the wealthiest in NBA history, however that was due more to his timing and the pay cap than to his status as the league’s top player.

Brown has been a vital member of Boston’s roster since being picked third overall in 2016. He has been named to the All-Star squad twice in the last three seasons and was named to the All-NBA team for the first time last season.

Brown’s statistics performance this season hasn’t been as strong as it has been in the past. His field-goal percentage of 45.9 is his lowest since he was a rookie. He’s averaging 22.2 points and 3.2 assists per game, both of which are his lowest totals in a season since 2019-20.

Brown said that the roster adjustments made by Boston this summer forced him to change his style of play.

“We’ve got a lot of players that we’re going to need to contribute,” stated Brown. “I still want to maintain my aggressiveness because that’s a part of who I am, but also finding those guys in space, on time, with great deliveries, allowing them to be able to play free and play with confidence.”

Individual outcomes haven’t been as good for Brown as they have been in prior seasons, but the Celtics are doing just fine. They have the best record in the Eastern Conference (15-5) and the best net rating in the NBA (plus-8.5).

If the Celtics are playing at this level despite Brown not being at his top statistically, the rest of the NBA should be concerned about where they can go if his numbers reflect how he believes he’s been playing on both ends of the floor thus far.
