Manchester United play Bayern Munich in their final group game of the Champions League on Tuesday, and both clubs will be looking for a comeback after suffering severe league defeats prior to the match.
On Saturday, the Red Devils were defeated 3-0 by Bournemouth, while the Bundesliga heavyweights were defeated 5-1 by Eintracht Frankfurt, their first league defeat of the season.
Both managers will be keen for a win at Old Trafford, but Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel expects Manchester United to be at their best on Tuesday.
“That’s correct. “I analyze them, and I see a lot of individual quality, as well as many, many good things,” the former Chelsea manager told the Sun when asked if both clubs are like wounded beasts after the weekend’s result.
“But it can happen that they (Man United) appear to be completely in control, as in Istanbul, and a few minutes are enough to shake the whole thing up.”
“Every defeat is about how you react. There is no sport without defeat, and this one is particularly painful for us.
“I did not watch the Manchester United game, but the circumstances indicate that United must win.”
“It’s waiting for a response from our team, which we desperately need.” This is what I see, but we also have problems to address.
“It’s not about passing judgment on Manchester United; it’s about analyzing them.”
“And in the good moments, they are very, very good and we expect them to be in the best shape.”
Bayern have already advanced to the round of 16 as Group A leaders, and while the following game is technically a dead rubber, they are unlikely to regard it as such.
A defeat would mean the end of the Red Devils’ European campaign for the season, given they are now bottom of the group, while a win would mean a place in the knockout stages of the Champions League or Europa League, depending on the outcome of the Copenhagen-Galatasaray match.
However, whether they have what it takes to beat such a side remains to be seen, with Harry Kane and other key players anticipated to play.
Man United have received an injury boost as Brazilian midfielder Casemiro has returned to training after being sidelined for several weeks with an injury, although the game may come too soon for him.
Even if he does play against the Germans, the former Real Madrid great may struggle to make an impact, and Erik ten Hag’s team will have their job cut out for them.
Despite not being favorites, they cannot be fully ruled out, and a win is very much feasible, but everyone must be on top of their game and cut out the mistakes if they want to play in Europe during the second part of the season.
