Why Liverpool vs Manchester United will draw the largest crowd at Anfield in nearly 50 years

Liverpool are expected to play Manchester United in front of the largest crowd at Anfield in more than 50 years on Sunday.

Anfield Construction Work

Anfield Road Stand in Liverpool has been renovated as part of an £80 million ($100.7 million) project. On Monday night, manager Jurgen Klopp will visit the stadium, which has been downsized to just over 50,00 this season, for a test event attended by 7,000 fans. But they need to get approval for anything before expanding the stadium’s capacity…

The Reds are awaiting a safety certificate from Liverpool City Council following Monday night’s test event, according to The Athletic. If approved, the capacity for Erik ten Hag’s visit will be boosted to 57,000 thanks to the partial opening of the upper tier of the renovated Anfield Road Stand.

Anfield Liverpool

Liverpool hopes to increase the stadium’s capacity to 61,000 by January. The all-time attendance record at Anfield is 61,905, set against Wolves in an FA Cup match in February 1952.

In addition to stadium improvements, the club will continue to build their fan zone and improve the general appearance of the stand until the end of the season.
