Ibrahima Konate is anticipated to be one of the next Liverpool players to sign a new deal, according to reports in France.
Konate has established himself as one of the mainstays of Jurgen Klopp’s growing squad since joining the Reds from RB Leipzig in 2021.
Despite being limited to 68 games in over two and a half seasons due to injury, his performances, particularly alongside Virgil van Dijk, have demonstrated world-class potential.
It should come as no surprise, then, that Liverpool are willing to extend the No. 5’s existing contract until 2026.
The French newspaper Le10Sport claims an exclusive on the commencement of talks between the club’s administration and Konate’s representation to recognize the Frenchman’s progress thus far.
Given that he still has two and a half years left on his current contract, there is “no ’emergency'” when it comes to negotiations.
However, Liverpool have stated that they “want his case to be dealt with in the coming weeks so that an agreement can be reached by the end of the 2023/2024 season.”
“A way to reward the French international,” according to the report, “while securing his future and repelling possible interested clubs.”
There has been no indication that Liverpool would be approached about selling Konate, despite the fact that the French media has frequently linked him with a move to Paris Saint-Germain.
In November, the 24-year-old told Canal+, “If I see myself at PSG…to say no would be to lie to you.”
“But to tell you that I’m thinking of it as a goal at the moment, no, not at all.”
While the prospect to play for his hometown club appears to be appealing, Konate appears to be in no hurry to leave Liverpool.
In fact, he appears to be fully dedicated to the club in the long run, which should result in a new deal being signed in the coming months.
Konate is unlikely to be the only player in negotiations about extending his time at Liverpool, with Klopp indicating a desire to keep Joel Matip after his contract expires in the summer.
Van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Mohamed Salah’s contracts end in 2025, while Andy Robertson and Caoimhin Kelleher’s contracts expire in 2026, along with Konate’s.
Thiago is expected to leave on a free transfer this summer, while Adrian’s contract is also set to expire.
