Los Blancos, who have won the European Cup a record 14 times, were knocked out last season by Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City team, who went on to win the trophy for the first time.

However, with the signing of England international Jude Bellingham, who has struck the ground running in the top flight of Spanish football with 12 goals and two assists, Madrid are back in the hunt for European glory, aiming for a 15th title in the 2023/24 season.

Ancelotti’s side presently leads Group C with 15 points from their first five games this season, and they will face Union Berlin on Tuesday evening.

Ancelotti revealed which team he believes will contend with his squad for the trophy this season ahead of the two sides’ second meeting this season, after Madrid recorded a 1-0 win back in September.

“City are favourites because they have the same squad that won it last season and haven’t changed much.” However, there are always surprises at the end of the Champions League,” Ancelotti added.

“Real Madrid is a team that will fight until the end.” We never think of ourselves as favorites, and I don’t suppose City do either. They won it last year, and they can win it again.”

Despite their dominance last season and Ancelotti’s encouraging statements, City fans may be wary of their chances in Europe given their current Premier League form.

After three consecutive draws against Chelsea, Liverpool, and Tottenham, City were upset by Unai Emery’s excellent Aston Villa team last week before edging Luton Town 2-1 at the weekend, with Guardiola gaining notice for his odd touchline behavior.

City continues to compete in all competitions, but injuries to Kevin De Bruyne, Erling Haaland, and Jeremy Doku may give opponents hope against last season’s treble winners.
