Rio Ferdinand, a Manchester United icon, has selected five wingers who would have assisted Rasmus Hojlund in scoring “five or six goals by now” this season.
The Red Devils have only scored 18 goals in their first 16 Premier League matches this season, with just five teams scoring fewer than them.
New signee Hojlund has yet to make an appearance for Manchester United in the Premier League, however he has five goals in five Champions League games.
Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial have only two goals between them as speculation mounts that Manchester United may look to bring in a new striker in January.
Due to his hard work, Hojlund has become a fan favorite, and Ferdinand believes the Denmark international would have scored Premier League goals if he had received better service.
“If Man United had [Michael] Olise, Jack Harrison, [Dwight] McNeil at Everton, Jacob Murphy at Newcastle – any one of those four wingers, I reckon he [Hojlund] would have five or six goals by now,” Ferdinand remarked in an interview with Vibe With Five.
“Why? They do this because they cross the ball. The initial thought of all four of those boys is to get the ball, head down, either beat the full-back and cross or give me a yard and cross the ball.
“He [Hojlund] requires assistance. Bowen is another person that could assist Hojlund. These individuals want to contribute, and we have wingers that want to get a shot off, shoot, or beat someone.”
Man United have a poor track record of developing players following Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013, with many players losing value once they arrive at Old Trafford.
Only Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, according to Ferdinand, has managed to retain his transfer worth among the present team of players.
“If you look at it, what player has gone to Manchester United and improved?” Ferdinand inquired. “Varane has deteriorated, and Casemiro has regressed in terms of value and worth.”
“The only one you’d get good money for is Bruno.” Who else is there besides him?
“Wan-Bissaka, you’re not going to get £50 million for Wan-Bissaka.” I’m sure you’re not receiving what they paid for, Dalot. Amad Diallo… I could go through all of them.
“I’m not sure who comes in. Would you receive the same compensation for Hojlund? No. Sancho? No. I could go on… Van Beek.”
