Despite Manchester United’s 1-0 loss to Bayern Munich on Tuesday, which terminated their involvement in European competition, under-pressure manager Erik ten Hag indicated that his side can now focus on improving their poor Premier League ranking.
To advance to the round of 16, the three-time European champions needed to beat Bayern in their Champions League group stage match and force a draw against Galatasaray in Copenhagen.
As a result of none of these incidents, United finished with four points from six games.
Because of their fourth-place finish, they didn’t even have the luxury of qualifying for the Europa League.
“There are still many things to play for and now we can focus, of course, on the Premier League and this is the level we want to play, Champions League, so we have to give every effort to be in the top four and next year be back in Champions League,” Ten Hag was quoted as saying by reporters.
“And then of course, we have the FA Cup, so there are so many things to play for.”
Despite having nothing to lose, United was unable to produce any chances, and Kingsley Coman’s goal in the 70th minute helped Bayern win.
“The main worry is that (Rasmus) Hojlund didn’t stand a chance.” “They’re not creating anything,” remarked former Manchester United footballer Paul Scholes on TNT Sports. “It’s been a really poor campaign.”
With five goals in the Champions League, Hojlund was United’s leading scorer.
“The game was like this for both sides: less chances,” Ten Hag said of the single shot on target.
“We did quite well, if not exceptionally well.” We had our chances, but we didn’t take them.”
United’s schedule does not get much easier; they travel to Liverpool, who are currently leading the league, on Sunday. United is six points behind fourth place in the Premier League after 16 games. Liverpool currently leads the table with 37 points.
