Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister ruled out of Sunday’s clash against Manchester United

Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister will not play against Manchester United on Sunday in the Premier League, according to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

The Argentina international hurt himself during last Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over Sheffield United, and is out of action for the time being.

After suffering a gash to his knee, Mac Allister continued playing with it bandaged until Curtis Jones pushed him off in the 59th minute.

Mac Allister will miss games against Union SG and Man United after missing Saturday’s victory against Crystal Palace.

Prior to Thursday’s Europa League matchup between Liverpool and Union SG, Klopp disclosed that the player’s injury is more severe than initially believed.

The Liverpool boss told reporters: “I am obviously not a doctor but they explain it to me pretty much every day why he is not ready yet and it is obviously a bit more tricky than we thought in the first moment.

“The other boy stepped on his knee and the stud went through pretty much the muscle onto the bone. And now we have to wait until the bone is healed and until Macca can deal with the pain, because it is pretty painful.

“Macca is actually a super-tough guy so we have probably to make sure just from an infection point of view nothing happens. That’s really important.

“I never had this injury for one of my players before but now we have it. I hope it will not take that long, I would like to say it’s day by day – but that would look like he could maybe play the next game but he will not be ready for that as well. So, I hope the next three or four days he makes big steps and then we will see.”

Joel Matip, Andrew Robertson, Stefan Bajcetic, Thiago Alcantara, and Diogo Jota are joining Mac Allister on the sidelines.

In addition, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, Alisson Becker, and Virgil van Dijk have all been rested by the Reds for their dead-rubber match against Union SG on Thursday.

Liverpool’s victory in Group E is essentially assured, therefore Klopp is already focused on Sunday’s Premier League matchup with rival Manchester United.

After racking up 37 points from their 16 league games, the Merseyside club will start the weekend as the league leaders.
