Manchester City fans have slammed Manchester United duo Antony and Marcus Rashford after Micah Hamilton scored on his Champions League debut.
Hamilton, 20, scored for the treble winners in their 3-2 triumph over Crvena Zvezda of Serbia on Wednesday night. Oscar Bobb and Kalvin Phillips both scored for City, who improved to six victories from six to advance from Group G with a perfect record.
Meanwhile, United exited Europe on Tuesday night after a disappointing season in which two first-team attackers – Antony and Rashford – failed to score a single goal between them. That was one topic of discussion on social media when promising Academy alumnus Hamilton made his debut.
He opened the score in Belgrade with a 29-minute stunner as a much-changed City gave the youngster and other periphery players wonderful opportunities. Rico Lewis, Hamilton, and Bobb were all part of a young squad led by John Stones, which also included Stefan Ortega, Sergio Gomez, and Phillips.
Bobb made it 2-0 before City pulled a goal back. Phillips then put his game-time difficulties behind him with his first goal for the club, as Crvena Zvezda added a consolation goal. City will now await the last-16 draw, which will not include their eliminated cross-Manchester rivals.
City fans praised Hamilton not only for his goal and overall performance, but also for taking less than half an hour to accomplish what United combo Antony and Rashford had failed to do at all during their failed Group A charge. Here is a selection of comments from X:
